First Amendment Award Winner

Each week the News Department chooses one employee who exemplifies accuracy and reliability through innovation, creativity, and hard work.

Although Misa has moved on to greater possibilities, we wanted to share with you the wonderful words of her co-workers that led to her winning The Quarterly First Amendment Award!

Cara Doyle: Misa is an amazing journalist. Her assertiveness, willing to dig her nails in to find the real story, and overall drive are true talents very few reporters have the ability to pull off. In the last several months, I’ve watched as she enterprises story ideas that are not only compelling, but make a difference in the lives of our viewers. I am so glad she was chosen by you as the winner of our quarterly prize. Congratulations, Misa...you deserve it!

Colin McAvoy: “I don’t think there isn’t one person in the newsroom who doesn’t think Misa is going to go very far in this business. She’s easily the most tenacious reporter we have, but enthusiasm isn’t all she’s known for. Over the past few months, we’ve all seen our Hawaiian import enterprise stories that have been not only compelling, but have gotten ENTIRE communities talking. Her series on the green energy scam was stuff to hang your hat on…the definition of quality work. Not to mention her great story with Adam about the old man who had the well drilled for him for free. That even brought a tear to my eye, DURING MY SHOW!! Lately, she’s enterprised stories WEEKS before some of our competition only to find out they had done the story before she could get to it. The epitome of a news reporter. If she can do this now, what WON’T she be able to do in 5 years? 10 years? The future is looking very bright for Misa. Sunglasses…check!”

Courtney Laydon: “No matter what is going on, how stressed out she is, Misa always walks into the newsroom with a smile on her face. She's got such a great attitude, which makes her wonderful to work with. But, on top of that, she's always working her hardest to put the best possible product on the air -- and you can always trust that she did everything possible to ensure it is accurate and reliable. Plus, whenever you need a creative line in your story -- Misa's always able to quickly come up with one!”

Tyler Rowley: “To think of just one story this past quarter that exemplifies her ability to push great stories forward. A ton of her stories showed her ability to take a story and make it truly into a piece of art with the sound bites and visual aspect. She continues to produce fantastic ideas, and is willing to tackle anything we give her.”

Tony Tandeski: “What can’t be said about little Ms. Misa. Seeing her tireless work at all hours of the day in getting to the bottom of every story, shows just how much she believes in our Accurate and Reliable goals. She will not let a story rest until she gets every detail, in order to give the viewer the broadest perspective on what’s happening where they live. It’s that dedication that helps us to reach our goals and become the news leader.”

Tim Mapes: “Misa...what can we say about the little bulldog that is Misa? Other than, if we did testing she would most definitely be a "star". I am amazed at the quality of her work...on hard stories...every single day. This quarter brought us the solar scammer...that was just awesome. But, like I said earlier...you have to really look at what she does day to day to appreciate the job she does...and how if makes our shows better.”

Carrie Marchese: “Whenever I think of Misa Maruyama I smile! She is one of those people that is so contagious … you just can’t get enough. I can assure you, our viewers feel the same. My last recollection comes from a lady in Trinity County. She said with such enthusiasm … “I want to steal her and keep her here in Weaverville … she really cares about us … doesn’t she?” You bet your butt she does! In fact Misa cares so much about the product and the people here in the Northstate, that at times I think it consumes her. This dynamic storyteller puts the people she interviews at ease with her charismatic charm. She tells their stories with passion and a genuine sensitivity …that many journalists tend to let go to the wayside. We always talk about her bull dog aggression and tenacious charisma. Yes … that’s a given. But what I respect most about Misa … is her deep sense of loyalty. Best bud set aside … I’m talking about loyalty towards her viewers … her co-workers … her sources … and KRCR as a whole. I feel so lucky to work with her every day! Misa … I heart you!!!!”
